The limits are based on whether or not first you have uninsured, under insured motorist coverage as an optional coverage that you can purchase. You can only purchase uninsured, under insured motorist up to the limits of bodily injury coverage that you carry on your policy. For example, if you have $100,000 in bodily injury, you can purchase $100,000 in UM coverage. Now, there’s two different types of uninsured, under insured motorist coverage. There is what’s called non-stacked and stacked. Non-stacked means that regardless of how many cars are on the policy, the amount that’s listed, for example, it says $100,000, that’s the limit. If you have a stacked policy and you have two cars and the limit is $100,000, you then stack those two coverages and you would have $200,000 in limits under that circumstance.
